One-on-One Attention for Youth Makes a Difference

My wife (Anita) and I co-coordinate the HOPE project which helps meet the educational needs of youth affected by AIDS. Most of our students have lost one or both of their parents to the disease. One of our activities is facilitating a twice-monthly session at the program’s learning center. There, we assist with basic tutoring, book borrowing, educational play and provide a general presence with the youth.

One of our students, Saidi, walks one hour to join us, though he is often too ill to do so. Recently, he joined us at the center and I spent 20 minutes one-on-one assessing his progress in math. In all honesty, he is years behind and does not show a great deal of promise academically, but he worked hard and had a genuine interest in improving. The encounter was nothing out of the norm, and if anything his academic situation was discouraging and left me feeling hopeless.

One week later our social worker told us that upon visiting Saidi’s home, the mother shared that the boy had, in weeks previous, stopped taking his HIV medication and he had shared with others that he was simply ready to die. However, after visiting the learning center, he told his mother that he now felt that he belonged somewhere and that he was going to recommit to his education, feeling a renewed sense of purpose and that someone cared.

His mother said that the change was entirely due to having received some one-on-one attention. We know that many of our students get joy from coming together a few times per month for learning and playing in a friendly, comfortable environment. However, too often we take for granted the impact such a simple service can have on youth who otherwise are often confined to harsh environments where sitting idle or doing difficult family chores are the primary options.

This past January, I was invited by the NGO GAIA to facilitate a short workshop on Theater of the Oppressed for teenagers who have been in prison. The youth were able to leave prison on some conditions, like participating socio-educative activities like my theater workshop at this NGO. Most of them come from the Favelas (shantytowns) and a few are middle-class kids who got in trouble for dealing with drugs and/or had been involved in a violent act.

Having been at GAIA before for other activities, I knew what was waiting for me. After introducing myself, I explained to the youth what we would be doing and they didn’t seem very excited. I started the workshop by leading a Theater of the Oppressed game where the participants were to introduce themselves by coming to the center of the circle to say their name and share one positive quality they had. This didn’t work out very well, especially after one of the boys said that he didn’t have anything good to say about himself (something that he most probably has heard his whole life). Then I tried a game to discuss on how we deal with power in our daily lives. Again I failed in that as well.

I started thinking that I had made a mistake in accepting to facilitate the workshop. We sat down and I asked them if they had been through a situation of oppression lately. One of the guys, named Pedro, mentioned torture when he was in jail, something very common in the Brazilian prisons. I asked them if we could make a scene about that issue to open a discussion, but a big no was the response (only someone who was never been tortured like me could naively ask something like that).

Then I insisted with the question about other situations of oppression and José told the group that he wanted to go back to high school, but he was not able to register after the principal heard that he had been confined in a juvenile prison for some months. Other guys had the same story. I felt that there was some energy around that issue and asked them to make a skit about it. After a significant amount of resistance, one of the NGO educators offered to act as the principal and one boy accepted to act as the teenager who had the registration denied (he was actually the one who came out with the situation).

I explained to them that in the Theater of the Oppressed we have a scene with an oppressed character who has a dream (someone who wants to go back to high school) and an oppressor (the principal) who would make any possible thing to not allow the dream to come through. I also explained that the oppressed character had to find a non-violent solution for his situation. We had four guys volunteering to confront the principal in the skit. Each one used their creativity in scene. One tried to manipulate the principal asking for a new opportunity in life with a soft voice.  Another said that he would start a fire in the school if he was not registered while another one tried to confront the institutionalized power personified in the principal. Finally, the last one told the principal that he could get a declaration from the NGO that would allow him to do the school registration.

I told them that many of us try to use those solutions in our daily lives, including the violent one, but we have to reflect on how many times we want to resolve things too quickly and end up involved in bad situations. I also pointed out that the one who “won” the game was the one who looked for an ally, not trying to solve the problem by himself, but looking for help.

I left the room relieved that in the end they started to get engaged and even participated with comments and suggestions. I reflected on how things that we take for granted such as going to school maybe is not so easy for everyone in our society.

Our Lady of Guadalupe in Light of the Service of Faith and the Promotion of Justice

Cece joined MKLM with her husband Dan in 1999. Cece and Dan lived and worked in Thailand throughout their entire MKLM experience. She collaborated with AMAN—the Asian Muslim Action Network. AMAN was one of the few organizations that worked directly with grassroots communities to address these issues from a community-based perspective. In particular this initiative of AMAN focused on involving youth directly in responding to issues of violence, human rights abuses, as well at religious, cultural and economic marginalization.AGUILAR-ORTIZ_237

Cece was directly involved in developing the youth for peace network. Her peace and justice experience, combined with her organizational skills contributed greatly to the project.

Cece and Dan left Maryknoll Lay Missioners in 2009 to continue their mission work in Tucson, Arizona.

From Mission to Mission Workshops

Our next workshop is April 16-19 in New York.

Here are some things I’d like you to know about our workshops:

  • Our workshops are for domestic AND international volunteers and missioners from any program, university, diocese, etc. We serve EVERYONE!
  • Former volunteers can attend our workshop in the months or even years after completing their term of service. The workshop is not just for those who recently finished their service.
  • We know that volunteers usually struggle financially after they finish their term of service and that you probably don’t have the funds to help them participate in our workshop. We work with each individual to make it possible for them to attend. We don’t turn anyone away.
  • Because many of our participants have just started working and can’t get time off, we encourage them to come even if they can’t come to the entire workshop.

The workshop includes:

  • Telling the story of your experience
  • Honoring the gifts of the experience
  • Recognizing what needs healing from the experience
  • Understanding and dealing with transition
  • Integrating the experience

CVN – Assistant Director – Volunteer Ministry

Position Description

The Assistant Director will assist with guiding Bon Secours Volunteer Ministry to fulfill its mission of providing lay persons with the opportunity to fully engage in the charism of the Sisters of Bon Secours and, in so doing, to bring about transformation through service with others. In support of this mission, the Assistant Director will lead the development of volunteer ministries and volunteer professional development. Through the design and implementation of creative marketing, the Assistant Director will expand the mission by leading the promotions and recruitment of Bon Secours Volunteer Ministry. The Assistant Director will supervise one employee and will report to the Director. This is an exempt position and requires travel, working evenings and weekends as necessary.

Minimum requirements include:

Bachelor’s degree in Business, Communications, Marketing or related field; a minimum of five (5) years of work experience in a project management, marketing or recruitment role; minimum of 3 years working with young adults; understanding or willingness to understand the mission of Bon Secours Volunteer Ministry and the Congregation of Bon Secours and understanding of Catholic Social Teaching.
