Just Faith Ministries Immersion Trips
In partnership with JustFaith Ministries (JFM), Maryknoll Lay Missioners (MKLM) invites JFM graduates to experience a spiritual journey into compassion and an immersion into the lives, culture, faith, and history of the people we serve. This is an extraordinary invitation to you to witness mission ministries that respond to basic needs and help to create a more just and compassionate world.
JustFaith Ministries Immersion Trips are centered in the radical encounter with “the other” and with God as God is expressed not only in our own traditions, but in the sacred stories, traditions, history, and culture of other peoples. As we enter the lives of the people of El Salvador, and Kenya, we will be accompanied by Maryknoll Lay Missioners to go beyond the boundaries of our own cultures.
Current Immersion Programs:
Your time in El Salvador will be focused on meeting and making friends with Salvadorans. You will be introduced to some of this country’s current political and social realities. You will learn about Salvadoran culture, faith, and history. By accompanying Maryknoll Lay Missioners in their daily ministries, you will gain unique insights into the contemporary struggles and solidarity of the people of El Salvador.
Maryknoll Lay Missioners came to El Salvador over 25 years ago. MKLM invites you to visit base communities and MKLM projects that include a soy nutrition program, adult literacy, youth ministry, an indigenous art school, community and environmental development, health care, and agricultural work. Visit the Maryknoll martyrs’ site; the tomb of Archbishop Romero in the Cathedral of San Salvador, the Divine Providence Hospital grounds where he lived, and the chapel where he was assassinated; the UCA (Jesuit Central American University), and the Romero Center.
Meet with Salvadorans to learn about their daily lives, their faith, their hopes, and their challenges, and participate in their local liturgical celebrations. Enjoy traditional Salvadoran food, music, and dance, and experience the beauty of the beach at Costa del Sol.
Tanzania is most known for the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Kilimanjaro, and Zanzibar; for great beauty, picturesque scenery, and abundance of wildlife. We’ll experience some of that but our missioners experience Tanzania along with its people, with whom we will walk in our experience there.
Tanzania is one of the oldest known human-inhabited areas on Earth; fossil remains of humans and pre-human hominids have been found dating back over two million years. We know that humanity’s first footsteps were taken in East Africa and since then the people of this region have navigated a long, rich, often arduous road. Mwanza in Tanzania will serve as our home base. MKLM missioners will be our hosts and will guide us thru the varied cultures and traditions that make up the rich tapestry that is the Tanzanian culture.
