Sustainable Development

Lay missioners in this area promote sustainable agricultural techniques; work with communities to identify alternative technologies; support “income generation” projects; and implement clean water systems.

For example, in El Salvador, lay missioners work with rural and urban populations to establish new sustainable agricultural projects including “fish farms” and income generating programs including a Soy Project that brings much needed income and affordable nutritional food to mothers, fathers, and families most in need of these services.

In Brazil, Maryknoll Lay Missioners initiated an urban garden project, on the grounds of a prison, that benefits and helps to sustain the women incarcerated there.
