Personal Data:

Hong and Sonny were both born in Vietnam and migrated to the United States where they met each other and married. They joined Maryknoll Lay Missioners with the Fall 2015 Orientation Class. They have two children. In the US, both Hong and Sonny have been active in supporting an orphanage in Vietnam and with a program to bring educational assistance to the poor in Vietnam. They were active in the Vietnamese Catholic community in their parish in Houston. Sonny is a professional photographer and has worked many years in medical management. He is also an experienced computer programmer.

Current Ministry:

Sonny Nguyen is working with Casa Nazareth and San Martin, both are part of Amanecer Bolivia, an organization started by the Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul in 1981 to provide a home and a new beginning for the abandoned, abused and orphaned street children of Cochabamba. The boys at Casa Nazareth are between the age of 6 and 12 years, while the boys at San Martin are between 11 and 15 years. They receive formal education and are taught responsibility for the house and for other boys. With Sonny’s effort, Educación y Empoderamiento para la Juventud, was created as an MKLM ministry to teach the youth some basic skills to impact their own lives and lives of others. Through this ministry, Sonny recently started a program to teach English for the children at Casa Nazareth and Leer Con Alegria. He’s also setting up a music program and a computer class for the older children at San Martin.
