Profiles of Returned Missioners

So they returned to their cobblers’ benches and broken shoes…
To their trading stores and wares…
To their oxen, ploughs and farms…
To their sick-houses and their dying…
To their schools and books and students.
And it followed them.
Because now it had gone to their very center.
Somehow they lived on.
But…sometimes they still wondered…and
THEY WERE NEVER THE SAME AGAIN!

~ Josef Honerkamp, Class of 1975, Western Samoa, Bolivia, United States

Who are these people – that left their homes, jobs, and loved ones to serve poor communities in faraway countries? What sorts of work did they do overseas, and what were their lives like there? What are they up to now? Below you will find some of their stories. Read them and ask yourself: How is God calling you to immerse yourself in the needs of the poor? What is the next stage in your journey of compassion?
