Sheila Matthews

Sheila was born and raised in Massachusetts and graduated from Stonehill College and NY Medical School, Graduate School of Nursing. Sheila first worked at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston for a couple of years and then went with VISTA to Vermont to a new Home Health/Public Health Agency. Although only in VISTA for a year and a half, she stayed with the agency for almost five years.

Sheila joined Maryknoll Lay Missioners in 1980 and was assigned to Guatemala in a health ministry with Health Promoters in an isolated rural area. After being in Guatemala almost twelve years, Sheila was transferred to El Salvador and served there for three years working with Ann Greig in the Soy Program and pastoral health ministry in a parish on the outskirts of San Salvador.

In 1996 Sheila was elected to the leadership team of Maryknoll Lay Missioners and she returned to the Maryknoll Center in New York. In 2004 she finished her time on leadership and returned to Massachusetts to care of for her aging parents.

Presently she is involved in peace and justice committees at the Greater Fall River Peace and Justice Committee, Pax Christi, and starting a social justice committee at her parish and an ecumenical committee for Darfur. She has guided several FAB trips to El Salvador.
