Maryknoll Lay Missioners (MKLM) held a special event on Aug. 8th, 2015 in Ossining, NY to honor our 40th Anniversary. We were delighted to welcome approximately 150 guests including friends and supporters of MKLM, returned Maryknoll Lay Missioners from all over, Maryknoll partners, Ossining officials including Town Supervisor Susanne Donnelly and Village of Ossining Mayor Victoria Gearity and other community members.

Dr. Susan Nagele, Maryknoll Lay Missioner

The occasion highlighted examples of Maryknoll Lay Missioners’ outreach and aid across our global mission sites and emphasized that all the Faithful are united to God’s mission in the universal Church. The celebration featured a presentation called Leading by Example: Shaping the Future of Mission, for which Dr. Susan Nagele was our keynote speaker. Susan inspired the crowd with her remarks that included memories from 31 years in mission as a Maryknoll Lay Missioner across Tanzania, South Sudan and Kenya, the many challenges she has faced, limitations to healthcare and services in East Africa, examples of Maryknoll Lay Missioners who are making a difference and her faith as motivation and sustaining force throughout it all. A transcript of Susan’s remarks is available here. Dr. Nagele was recently featured by Catholic News Service in this August 12th article posted to our Newsroom.

Sam Stanton, our Executive Director, served as master of ceremonies and provided the perspective that mission is for all, as a calling from our Baptism. He shared MKLM’s ministries throughout the world and our role to continually build bridges of understanding and awareness for worldwide mission with the U.S. church. He honored many long-term Maryknoll Lay Missioners and their combined experience and claimed recognition for Maryknoll Lay Missioners’ role as a leader in shaping and sustaining lay mission outreach today. Using quotes and examples from active and returned Maryknoll Lay Missioners, Sam shared MKLM’s history, unique characteristics and introduced our current ministries.

We offer our heartfelt thanks to the many individuals who have provided generous gifts, sponsorship and prayers to Maryknoll Lay Missioners in honor of our 40th Anniversary. Maryknoll Lay Missioners depends entirely on private donations to raise the means to recruit, train, send and sustain our Lay Missioners serving in mission around the world.
