Some 35 members of the Orientation Classes of 1979 (40th), 1984 (35th), 1989 (30th), 1994 (25th), 1999 (20th) and 2009 (10th) came to the Maryknoll campuses August 2-4, 2019. to celebrate their Jubilee Weekend.
Vicki Amour Hileman, admissions manager and returned missioner, facilitated the storytelling sessions. It was a time for sharing stories and renewing friendships. Spouses, children and grandchildren also attended, as well as other returned missioners, Maryknoll Lay Missioners current and former staff members, and society and congregation members, who were present for the Saturday afternoon and evening events and the Sunday liturgy.
On Saturday afternoon, we held a prayer service to remember all the class members who have died: Jean Donovan (martyred in El Salvador) and Margaret Dery from 1979; Elizabeth Dillner Lio and Marie Parmly from 1984; and Susan Koenig and Rosemary Pastro from 1989.
Susan Nagele (class of 1984) and Debbie Northern (class of 1999) shared their mission stories as current missioners celebrating jubilee years. The other current missioner from a jubilee year, Minh Nguyen (class of 2009), who is in Bolivia, was unable to attend.
In the evening, Maryknoll Lay Missioners’ executive director, Ted Miles, gave an update on the association, and Susan Nagele, who was one of the delegates at the founding of the Maryknoll Mission Association of the Faithful in 1994, spoke about that founding assembly and what was planned for our 25th anniversary celebration on Aug. 15.
Following this, the first Bishop McCarthy Spirit of Mission Awards were given to Cathy Breen (class of 1989) and Wynnie-Fred Victor Hinds (class of 1994).
The weekend ended with a liturgy celebrated in the Lady Chapel at the Society with Maryknoll Father Mike Duggan and a cookout at the Walsh Building. It was a wonderful time to get together.
Many thanks go to Lupe Garcia and Karen Bortvedt, who handled most of the logistics for the weekend. Also thanks go to the Maryknoll Congregation and Society who allowed us the use of their facilities.
