Joe Regotti is originally from Pittsburgh, PA. He joined MKLM with his wife Jean Walsh and two daughters in 1997. Hannah was four at the time and Maria was one. Before coming to MKLM Joe worked with farm workers in the Hudson Valley of N.Y. Prior to that, he was involved in Central America peace and justice work for many years. He lived a total of eight years in Guatemala, Nicaragua and Chile. As a lay missioner he and his family lived and worked in Oaxaca, Mexico. Joe’s main ministry there was working with a Oaxacan community organization around civic rights and leadership development. Through these relationships Joe helped to found a hospital that serves some of the poorest communities in Oaxaca. In 2001 Joe and his family returned to MKLM home center in Ossining. Currently he is on the staff of the Mission Services Department. Joe graduated from the University of Notre Dame in Indiana.
Joe’s primary ministry is as Coordinator of Education and Formation Programs in the Mission Services Department (MSD). MSD staff members are responsible for selection and formation of new Maryknoll lay missioners. In addition, MSD provides services to lay missioners in the field as well as those returning to the U.S. in order to help them integrate their mission experience into the broader context of their lives in a healthy way.
Joe leads the MSD staff in design and implementation of the 13-week program of studies held at the MKLM home center each autumn to prepare new Maryknoll Lay Missioners for overseas mission. This intense residential program is designed to give participants many of the elements necessary to have a successful experience in the country where they will be serving. The program includes theology and scripture courses, social analysis and cross-cultural training, and information on the respective mission sites. Joe’s ministry also includes the accompaniment of each mission candidate through the program in an ongoing process of discernment as to whether MKLM is a good match for the respective candidate. This program culminates with the annual Maryknoll Sending Ceremony in December, when the new Maryknoll Lay Missioners are sent to mission.
Joe’s responsibilities include helping to screen applicants to the Maryknoll Lay Missioners. This involves detailed application review and personal interviews, writing of reports summarizing information and making recommendations based on findings. He also participates in the design and implementation of annual Maryknoll Mission Integration Programs, which are three-week in-residence courses provided to experienced Maryknoll Lay Missioners as ongoing mission education and formation.
Joe’s experience as a missioner and his extensive time in Latin America contribute greatly to the work of the Mission Services Department.
Joe Regotti passed on to the fullness of life in God’s love at home with his dear family on Saturday, January 3rd. Joe was the loving husband of Jean Walsh, his devoted partner for 25 years.
